Een goed alternatief voor de Finder is Path Finder. Dit programma heeft veel meer mogelijkheden voor bestandsbeheer, en lijkt daardoor wat meer op de Windows Verkenner of de Norton Utilities uit de DOS-tijd. Allereerst geeft het programma standaard de mapstructuur weer zoals je dat gewend bent. Namelijk: alles alfabetisch, maar gerubriceerd op mappen en bestanden. Wat ook heel praktisch is, is dat je twee locaties binnen één venster kunt tonen, wat het extra makkelijk èn overzichtelijker maakt om bestanden van de ene naar de andere map te kopiëren.
Tegelijkertijd zijn klassieke Mac OS X functies, zoals de Cover Flow-weergave, behouden, waardoor je niets van de Finder hoeft te missen. Ook andere functies van de Finder, zitten ongeveer op dezelfde plek (zoals Verbind met server in het menu Ga). Er zijn bovendien zeer veel weergavemogelijkheden verzameld in het menu Weergave. Zo kun je met een druk op de knop verborgen bestanden tonen, sorteren op maar liefst veertien verschillende categoriën. Ook het werken met tabbladen is erg handig, want zo kun je in één venster snel wisselen tussen verschillende locaties. Bovenin zijn snelkoppelingen opgenomen naar veel gebruikte locaties, zoals documenten, muziek, films, afbeeldingen, bureaublad en programma’s. En er zijn ook knoppen – in feite snelkoppelingen – om bestanden te branden naar een cd of dvd, iDisk te benaderen of een netwerklocatie koppelen. Handig is ook de ‘knipselstapel’ (ook bekend als de drop stack). Hier kun je bestanden die je wilt verplaatsen of kopiëren even tijdelijk parkeren totdat je de juiste map hebt gevonden. Verder staan zijn de iconen van programma’s en bestanden in dit programma strak in het gareel. Het niet is mogelijk om ze (per ongeluk) een paar millimeter naar links of rechts te verplaatsen (of buiten beeld), waardoor het altijd overzichtelijk blijft. En last but not least… Path Finder kan je als een van de weinige OS X programma’s het venster wél maximaliseren met de groene knop. Je hebt dan maximaal overzicht op je bestanden.
Je kunt ervoor kiezen Path Finder naast de Finder te gebruiken, maar ook om de laatste helemaal te vervangen. Dat kan niet zomaar, want Finder zit vastgekoppeld in het Dock en laat zich niet zomaar verwijderen. Via het menu Path Finder en dan Finder kun je echter kiezen om de Finder uit het dock te verwijderen en in de voorkeuren kun je opgeven dat Path Finder voortaan wordt gestart na het opstarten.
